OpenAI quietly launched a dedicated translation tool called ChatGPT Translate. The service, spotted by Android Authority, handles text, voice, and images across more than 50 languages. It features automatic language detection and a unique ability to rewrite translations for different contexts, tones, and audiences.

This move positions OpenAI against established players like Google Translate, which recently received a Gemini-powered upgrade. However, ChatGPT Translate is still in its early stages. The desktop version lacks voice input, and there's no way to upload images for translation despite claims it can read them. It also misses website, document, and handwriting support.

Most critically, the tool exists only as a webpage with no dedicated app, making it unusable offline. This limits its appeal for travelers in areas with poor internet access. Unlike Google's Pixel 10, which offers real-time call translations, ChatGPT Translate cannot yet translate live conversations. OpenAI announced the tool without fanfare, leaving its official launch date unclear.
