OpenAI Adds Animated Pets to Codex

OpenAI has introduced AI-generated pets to its Codex application, providing developers with animated companions that visualize coding assistance progress. These floating overlays inform users about Codex's current activities, task completion status, and when developer input is required, making coding more engaging through visual feedback rather than traditional notifications.

Developers can summon or dismiss pets by typing "/pet" in the Codex app. Eight built-in pets are available, with custom options created through the "/hatch" command enabling AI generation of unique companions. Early adopters have already uploaded numerous designs including creative interpretations like Microsoft Clippy, available on both Windows and macOS platforms.

To encourage adoption, OpenAI is offering 30 days of ChatGPT Pro for the 10 most popular user-generated pets. The feature maintains pets as visual indicators rather than active coding assistants, representing an interesting approach to humanizing AI assistance in technical workflows without compromising functionality.
