Octopus Energy and CATL Launch European EV Battery Swap Network for Trucks

Octopus Energy and CATL have partnered to bring Chinese-style battery swap stations to Europe, targeting the electric trucking sector. The joint venture, called Swaptopus, plans to deploy facilities that can replace depleted batteries with fresh ones in minutes, potentially serving thousands of trucks daily. This approach could address range anxiety for commercial fleets while offering faster turnaround than diesel refueling.

Battery swapping has struggled elsewhere, with Tesla abandoning the concept years ago due to high costs and engineering challenges. However, it has gained traction in Asia, where CATL teamed with Sinopec in 2025 to build a massive network across China. Consumer brands like Nio and Gogoro have also successfully deployed swap stations for smaller vehicles.

Heavy-duty trucks face unique challenges: larger batteries add weight, creating a vicious cycle where more energy is needed to move the additional mass. The companies believe smaller batteries combined with reliable swap infrastructure could shift this equation. William Rowe, CEO of Swaptopus, says the stations can charge cells during off-peak grid demand, effectively turning each hub into a distributed power plant.

The first UK mega hubs are scheduled to open in 2027, though logistics companies may resist having their rented batteries used to support the energy grid. Success will depend on securing major truck manufacturers' commitment, as fleet purchasing decisions require long-term infrastructure guarantees.
