NFC Charging Could Slim Smartglasses, Says Nu Current

Nu Current showcased a prototype at Augmented World Expo that could change the look of smartglasses. The company fitted a pair of Ray‑Ban Meta frames with a tiny coil in the arm, replacing the bulky pogo pins that sit on the nosebridge. The result is a slimmer design that still charges inside a case.

Meta’s current glasses need the wearer to press the frame hard into a case to make contact with the pogo pins, a requirement that forces a thicker nosepiece. The new NFC‑based system can deliver 50 percent charge in 20 minutes, matching Meta’s existing charging speed while freeing up space for slimmer frames.

Nu Current’s CEO Jacob Babcock said the coil’s size—measured in tenths of millimeters—means almost every cubic millimeter inside the glass matters. He also noted that NFC could eventually lead to a universal charger for wearables, similar to how Qi standardized phone charging, though a true ecosystem may still be years away.

Essilor Luxottica, the maker behind Ray‑Ban, already partners with Nu Current on its Nuance Audio glasses, showing industry interest in lighter designs. If NFC charging becomes widespread, manufacturers could drop the bulky nosebridge entirely, offering consumers a broader range of fashionable, functional eyewear.
