New York Governor Kathy Hochul proposed legislation that would allow Waymo to launch robotaxi services across the state. Following successful autonomous vehicle tests in New York City during 2025, this new pilot program aims to permit commercial for-hire services outside the city limits. The move signals a major shift for the state's transportation policy.

The bill requires applicants to prove they have local support and meet the highest safety standards. Waymo’s Head of Global Public Policy, Justin Kintz, praised the proposal as a transformative moment. The company has actively spent over $370,000 lobbying New York regulators, so this legislation appears to be a direct result of those efforts.

Waymo currently operates commercial services in California, Texas, and Georgia, often partnering with Uber. The company has aggressive expansion plans, committing to launches in Las Vegas, San Diego, and Detroit by 2026. New York represents a massive, lucrative market that has historically been difficult for autonomous tech to penetrate.
