A new Neon Genesis Evangelion series has been announced during the franchise's 30th anniversary event in Japan. Hideaki Anno, the original creator, will not write the scripts for this iteration. Instead, Yoko Taro, known for creating the NieR video game series, will take over writing duties for the upcoming show.

Veteran Evangelion director Kazuya Tsurumaki will helm episodes, bringing experience from the Rebuild of Evangelion films and recent Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime. The production will be a collaboration between Studio Khara and Cloverworks, with Keiichi Okabe, composer of the NieR franchise, scoring the music. While the creative team is set, plot details remain scarce.

The series could take any direction given Taro's reputation for complex, unconventional storytelling. His work on NieR demonstrates a willingness to explore parallel universes and non-linear narratives spanning thousands of years. This creative approach could breathe fresh life into the Evangelion franchise, though fans will have to wait for more information about whether this will be a remake, sequel, or spin-off. The announcement trailer provides little plot information, leaving the story direction open to speculation.
