Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos is trying to reassure Hollywood that a potential Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition won't kill movie theaters. He told The New York Times that if the deal closes, Netflix would keep a 45-day theatrical window for WBD films. This directly contradicts earlier reports that Netflix favored a much shorter 17-day exclusive run.

The debate matters because theater chains are already worried about market consolidation. Cinema United, a trade group, warned Congress that the Netflix-WBD deal would give one streaming giant too much control over production and distribution. Sarandos is clearly attempting to appease theater owners who have publicly opposed the acquisition.

His comments also address past criticism. Sarandos clarified previous remarks calling the theatrical business "outmoded for some," arguing it's still vital for audiences with nearby theaters. With Paramount Skydance still bidding against Netflix, the final outcome will determine the future of film distribution windows.
