A SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying the Crew-11 astronauts splashed down safely off the California coast on January 15. The team returned home a month ahead of schedule following an unspecified medical issue aboard the International Space Station. NASA initiated the early departure as a precaution, noting the station lacked adequate diagnostic tools for a proper assessment. The agency confirmed the affected crew member remained stable throughout the ordeal.

Mission members NASA astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman, JAXA’s Kimiya Yui, and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov launched on August 1. They logged 167 days in orbit rather than the originally planned duration. This marks the first time NASA has abbreviated a mission specifically due to a non-critical health concern, prioritizing crew safety over the remaining science objectives of the flight.

With Crew-11 back on Earth, the orbiting laboratory currently houses just three personnel: two Russian cosmonauts and NASA astronaut Chris Williams. To prevent a staffing gap, NASA is now exploring options to launch Crew-12 earlier than the scheduled February 15 date. The agency is moving quickly to ensure continuous human presence on the station while maintaining strict health protocols for all future long-duration flights.
