Microsoft hires analyst Matthew Ball to steer Xbox turnaround

Microsoft has appointed veteran industry analyst Matthew Ball as Xbox’s chief strategy officer, tasking him with reviving the console line amid supply shortages and fierce competition. Ball joins a leadership team reshaped after Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond departed, and follows recent price cuts to Game Pass and the tease of a PC‑console hybrid dubbed Project Helix.

Microsoft’s gaming division endured massive July 2025 layoffs that shuttered studios and cancelled titles, a backlash to an aggressive acquisition spree that included Double Fine, Compulsion Games and the court‑approved $69 billion Activision Blizzard deal in 2023. The turmoil prompted a reshuffle in February, promoting Matt Booty to chief content officer and installing Asha Sharma, formerly of CoreAI, as head of Microsoft Gaming.

Alongside Ball, former Azure OpenAI lead Scott Van Vliet arrives as Xbox CTO, signaling a push to integrate AI and refine hardware strategy. With Ball’s metaverse expertise and Van Vliet’s cloud background, Xbox hopes to stabilize its console lineup and differentiate from Sony, Nintendo and the upcoming Valve entry. The hires mark a decisive effort to arrest the brand’s decline.
