Meta sues NSO Group over new WhatsApp phishing breach

Meta has asked a federal court to hold Israeli spyware firm NSO Group in contempt after detecting a fresh spearfishing campaign targeting WhatsApp users in Jordan and Lebanon. The company says it disrupted the attempt before any accounts were compromised and disclosed the malicious domains to help others check for exposure.

The contempt request follows a 2019 lawsuit that led to a jury awarding $167 million in damages, later reduced to $4 million and accompanied by a permanent injunction barring NSO from attacking WhatsApp. Last year, a judge affirmed that order, cementing Meta’s legal shield against Pegasus‑style intrusions.

Meta’s spokesperson confirmed fewer than ten users were targeted and that no signs of compromise appeared. By publishing the phishing URLs, Meta aims to alert the broader security community and reinforce the injunction’s relevance. The move underscores ongoing tensions between tech platforms and surveillance vendors, highlighting the need for vigilant defenses on messaging apps.
