Indonesia is joining a growing list of countries restricting social media access for young users. Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid announced that starting March 28, platforms must delete accounts belonging to Indonesian users under 16. The ban targets major services including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Roblox, and Bigo Live.

The implementation will occur in stages, beginning with these "high-risk" platforms. Hafid stated that all affected services must comply with Indonesian government obligations, though specific requirements remain unspecified. Meta responded that it has not yet received official regulations from Indonesia and is awaiting further details.

This move follows Australia's pioneering social media ban for under-16s and comes as Spain and Malaysia also move toward similar restrictions. The global trend reflects growing concerns about social media's impact on children's mental health and development, with governments increasingly intervening to limit youth access to these platforms.
