IMAX 70mm film utilizes a massive 1.43:1 aspect ratio with a frame size of 69.8 x 48.5mm, projected onto colossal screens up to 59 x 79 feet. This format boasts exceptional resolution, up to an 18K equivalent, and is projected with 7.5 times the brightness of standard theaters, creating a truly immersive experience. However, the scarcity of dedicated IMAX 70mm theaters (around 24 in the US) and the high cost of production and prints make it rare. Films like Oppenheimer and The Odyssey have utilized this format.

IMAX digital, or IMAX with Laser, is a step down in resolution, typically maxing out at 4K. While some digital IMAX cinemas can project the taller 1.43:1 aspect ratio, most are limited to 1.90:1. The GT Laser dual projector system offers superior brightness and contrast to film, but these theaters are also scarce. Standard 70mm film, while offering a resolution three times that of 35mm film, is projected with a wider aspect ratio and cropped image, lacking the full immersion of true IMAX 70mm.
