Every major AI model uses user conversations for training by default, but opting out is straightforward. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok all offer toggles to disable data collection, typically found under privacy or settings menus. Meta presents an exception; US users cannot opt out, while EU and UK users benefit from GDPR protections.

Importantly, opting out only prevents future use; it does not delete existing data or retroactively remove old conversations. ChatGPT’s toggle, labeled "Improve the model for everyone," applies across web and mobile. Claude allows users to choose between a five-year retention period or a 30-day deletion window.

Gemini’s setting, recently renamed "Keep Activity," permits human review of a chat subset for up to three years. Copilot features two separate controls for training and voice data. Grok enrolls all accounts by default, covering posts and chat interactions.

Users must actively uncheck these options to opt out. Since December last year, Meta has used AI chats for ad targeting without a decline option for US users. Regardless of settings, personalization and memory functions remain separate from training controls, ensuring day-to-day use is unaffected.
