Google has unveiled the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard that merges AI agents with e‑commerce platforms to streamline purchasing. The protocol introduces three key features: a new checkout option in Google Search that lets users buy eligible items from select U.S. retailers using Google Pay (with PayPal slated for future support), a Business Agent that acts as a virtual sales associate speaking in a brand’s voice, and Direct Offers that deliver exclusive deals directly within AI Mode. Early adopters include Lowe’s, Michaels, Poshmark, and Reebok, while the framework is compatible with existing industry protocols such as Agent2Agent, Agent Payment Protocols, and Model Context Protocol.

Co‑developed with major players like Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, and endorsed by Macy’s, Stripe, and Visa, UCP aims to simplify the entire shopping journey—from discovery to post‑purchase support. For retailers, the protocol promises higher conversion rates and richer customer interactions, whereas consumers benefit from a more intuitive, AI‑driven checkout experience. The move signals a broader industry shift toward integrated, agent‑powered commerce ecosystems.
