God of War Recasts Kratos After Ryan Hurst Injury

The Prime Video series God of War has halted production after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a serious on‑set injury, forcing Amazon MGM Studios to recast the role of Kratos. Hurst, who was announced as the lead at the start of the year, tore his bicep while filming a stunt and required surgery.

Studios had hoped to have the 50‑year‑old actor back by mid‑August, but typical recovery from bicep surgery is 4-6 months. Given the physical demands of the role, Hurst may have needed even longer to regain the required fitness, and Deadline reported that production could not wait. Consequently, the decision was made to find a new actor, and filming remains paused with a target resumption in mid‑October in Vancouver. Sony Pictures Television is also involved in the production.

According to Deadline, four episodes have already been completed and will need to be reshot with the new Kratos. The only public look at the live‑action adaptation so far is an official image released in February showing Kratos and Atreus (played by Callum Vinson).

Hurst had reportedly put on 40 pounds of muscle for the part. The rest of the cast includes Ed Skrein as Baldur, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Max Parker as Heimfall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok. Studios still plan to shoot two seasons back‑to‑back once a replacement is found. The adaptation aims to bring the long‑running PlayStation franchise to a broader audience.
