Fumito Ueda's gen Atlas Brings Giant Robot Duo to PS5, Xbox, PC

Fumito Ueda, the visionary behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, has unveiled his next project: gen Atlas. The trailer reveals players will pilot a massive robot head alongside an unlikely companion, continuing Ueda's signature style of pairing contrasting characters in atmospheric worlds.

The game appears set in decaying high-tech environments filled with abandoned facilities and endless plains. According to Epic Games' press release, colossal structures dominate the landscape alongside parasitic creatures and scanning mechanics. These elements suggest Ueda is exploring themes of technological collapse and survival.

gen Atlas marks a significant shift for Ueda's projects, as Epic Games will publish the title across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This represents the first time a Ueda game will appear on Xbox or PC platforms, expanding his typically PlayStation-exclusive audience.

Given that The Last Guardian spent nearly a decade in development before its 2016 release, expectations should remain tempered despite the intriguing reveal. Still, gen Atlas represents Ueda's attempt to evolve his minimalist storytelling approach for a new generation of hardware and players.
