The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has settled a lawsuit against John Deere, bringing right-to-repair provisions to the agricultural equipment manufacturer's products. The FTC, alongside five states, sued Deere last year alleging unfair practices that restricted farmers' ability to repair their own machinery and drove up service costs.

Under the terms of the settlement, John Deere must provide farmers and independent repair shops access to the same repair resources, including software, that are currently available only to authorized dealers. This agreement will last for an initial 10-year period. Deere will also face reporting and oversight requirements, with the potential for the agreement to be extended if the company violates its terms.

This settlement represents a significant win for the right-to-repair movement, particularly for farmers who rely on their equipment. It addresses concerns over the increasing costs of new technology and promotes a more sustainable approach to maintaining agricultural machinery. The FTC's action ensures that farmers will have more options for repairing their tractors and other equipment, potentially lowering repair expenses and reducing downtime.
