John Deere Pays $99 Million, Grants 10-Year Repair Tools in Landmark Settlement

Farmers have fought John Deere for years over repair rights. This week, the company agreed to a $99 million settlement, funding a class‑action pool for those who paid authorized dealers for large‑equipment repairs between January 2018 and now. Plaintiffs stand to recover 26%–53% of overcharge damages, far above the typical 5%–15% range.

Alongside the cash, Deere committed to provide digital tools for maintenance, diagnosis and repair of tractors, combines and other machinery for 10 years. Farmers had previously hacked software to keep machines running. In 2023, a memorandum of understanding gave third parties limited access, but the new settlement locks in a legally binding agreement that expands tool availability and protects intellectual property.

The settlement arrives as John Deere confronts another FTC lawsuit that claims the company deliberately restricts repair access. If the court approves, the agreement could establish a benchmark for the automotive and appliance industries watching the right‑to‑repair debate. It also clarifies why used‑equipment prices surged; farmers indeed paid up to $60,000 for a 40‑year‑old tractor because easier repairs kept downtime minimal. The ruling will cement a new industry standard today.
