Free GTA V upgrades hit PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – Rockstar drops the price

Rockstar Games rolled out a free upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V, letting owners of the PS4 or digital Xbox One edition jump to the current‑gen PS5 or Xbox Series X/S build on June 18. The newer version, released in March 2022, brings sharper visuals and faster protagonist swaps.

Players who already own the PC edition can also obtain the Enhanced build at no cost, gaining ray‑traced ambient occlusion and global illumination that were absent from earlier releases. The upgrade preserves save data and Online progress, keeping communities intact across platforms.

Offering the free switch signals Rockstar’s shift toward consolidating its franchise on newer hardware, echoing the 2021 move that closed GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360. It also positions the title for a broader audience as PS5 and Series X/S penetration rises. This consolidation also streamlines future patches and support.

Meanwhile, fans await the next chapter, with Rockstar maintaining the November 19 release date for GTA VI after repeated delays. The company’s focus on incremental updates may explain the timing of the free upgrade, but it leaves the community eager for new content.
