Amazon doesn't reveal a typical physical lifespan, but it does guarantee security updates for at least four years from the date of purchase, or until the listed support date for the model, whichever is later. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select and 4K Plus are supported through at least Dec. 31, 2030.

A support deadline indicates the duration of security fixes, not when the hardware will stop working. Four years is a minimum, not a countdown. The device can remain fully functional beyond that window, but simply turning on isn't a high standard. Older hardware becomes less usable as apps demand more and video standards like H.265/HEVC and AV1 require newer decoding hardware.

Apps can be less accommodating over time. Netflix, for example, may drop support for older devices, as it did with first-generation Fire TV and Fire TV Stick models in June 2025, more than a decade after their 2014 launch. The hardware may still work, but the services you bought it for might not.

Before replacing your Fire TV Stick, try restarting it, updating software, clearing caches, or checking power and network connections. If problems persist, consider upgrading. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select has 1GB of RAM and costs about $40, while the 4K Plus has 2GB for about $50—a modest price for more headroom.
