The US Department of Justice is challenging a 2025 court ruling that stopped short of forcing Google to sell its Chrome browser, despite finding the company maintained a search monopoly. The DOJ and several states argue that selling Chrome is essential to dismantling Google's dominance.

Judge Amit Mehta had previously rejected the divestiture idea, saying Google didn’t use Chrome to enforce illegal restraints. Still, he imposed other restrictions, such as banning exclusive distribution deals and requiring Google to share search data with rivals. Those terms are also under appeal by Google.

This legal back-and-forth delays real consequences for Google, even after being officially labeled a monopolist. The outcome could redefine how big tech platforms operate, especially concerning browser market control. Expect further rulings to shape Google’s business structure in the coming months.
