Disney sued over facial recognition privacy

Disney faces a class action lawsuit over its use of facial recognition technology at Disneyland and California Adventure. The complaint alleges entertainment giant fails to provide sufficient notice to park visitors about facial scanning at park entrances. Visitors claim they weren't adequately informed about having their biometric data collected and stored during park entry.

Lawyer Blake Yagman represents the proposed class of visitors, arguing guests should "expressly opt in" with written consent before sensitive facial recognition technology scans their faces. The lawsuit seeks $5 million on behalf of affected park visitors, emphasizing privacy rights shouldn't burden victims. The suit questions whether Disney actually deletes biometric data within its claimed 30-day window.

Disney introduced facial recognition systems at both California parks in April. While the company claims it disposes of acquired data within 30 days, the lawsuit challenges this accuracy. The suit suggests biometric information may be compared against initial ticket purchases or annual pass photos, potentially creating longer-term data retention than disclosed to visitors.
