NASA's Curiosity rover ran into an unexpected problem on Mars when a rock became lodged on its drill bit during a sampling attempt on April 29. The slab, nicknamed Atacama, measured about 1.5 feet wide and weighed nearly 30 pounds. This had never happened before in the rover's 14 years exploring Mars. After several attempts involving tilting, rotating, and vibrating the drill, the team finally dislodged the rock on May 1.

Researchers deployed a video camera and hydrophone 260 meters deep in Inglefield Bredning, a fjord in northwest Greenland, during August 2025. They recorded 478 different organisms including comb jellies, arrowworms, snailfish, and shrimp. The instruments also captured sounds from nearby narwhals, cracking icebergs, and boat engines. Their findings were published in PLOS One.

NASA released over 12,000 photos from the Artemis II mission this week, featuring striking images of the moon, Earth, and the Milky Way. Meanwhile, David Attenborough celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday, and scientists named a newly discovered Chilean wasp species, Attenboroughnculus tau, in his honor.
