ChatGPT Voice Mode Arrives in CarPlay

OpenAI has quietly released ChatGPT's Voice mode through Apple CarPlay, expanding AI accessibility in vehicles. Owners of CarPlay-compatible cars can now access conversational AI while driving, though the integration comes with limitations compared to Siri's native functionality.

To use the feature, drivers need the latest iOS and ChatGPT app versions. After connecting their iPhone to CarPlay, users select "New voice chat" from the ChatGPT interface and begin speaking when the app indicates it's "listening." The experience requires manual initiation rather than voice activation.

Unlike Siri, ChatGPT cannot control car functions like adjusting temperature or skipping tracks. Users must open the app to resume conversations rather than using a wake word. OpenAI suggests the feature works best for how-to advice, brainstorming ideas, and language practice while driving.

The arrival of Voice mode in CarPlay represents OpenAI's continued push into automotive interfaces, though its utility remains limited for actual vehicle control. Drivers seeking conversational assistance during their commute now have an additional option beyond Apple's built-in assistant.
