Canada unveils AI strategy with focus on data protection and adoption

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched a new national AI strategy called 'AI for All' that will shape the country's approach to artificial intelligence over the next five years. The plan aims to build trust in AI while increasing adoption and investing in Canadian-built technology infrastructure. Unlike the US framework, it emphasizes impact on everyday citizens more directly.

The strategy responds to a projected $4.8 trillion global AI market by 2033, positioning Canada to capture economic benefits. It calls for updated legislation to strengthen personal data protections against deepfakes and surveillance pricing, plus an 'online safety regime' for chatbot and social media users. A National AI Literacy Initiative will provide free entry-level training, ensuring students have access to trusted AI tools.

For businesses, the plan proposes a public AI supercomputer and investment in Canadian-owned compute and cloud infrastructure aligned with clean energy goals. Government procurement will help provide growth capital. Carney projects the strategy could create up to 90,000 AI-related jobs and work placements across the economy.

However, the strategy overlooks mounting evidence that AI adoption doesn't automatically boost productivity and growing public distaste for the technology. With free tools like ChatGPT and Gemini already available, low adoption rates may reflect AI's actual limitations rather than Canadians' lack of understanding.
