Bumble's AI Dating Assistant Bee Aims to Replace Swiping

Bumble is testing an AI dating assistant called Bee that could eliminate the need for swiping through profiles. The company announced Bee during its fourth quarter earnings, revealing plans to integrate the AI into a new "Dates" experience. When users opt in, Bee conducts an onboarding chat to learn about their values, relationship goals, communication style, lifestyle, and dating intentions.

Bee then searches for compatible matches and notifies both users when it finds a potential connection, providing a summary of why they might be a good fit. From there, users can chat and potentially arrange a real-life date. Bumble envisions even broader applications for Bee, including collecting anonymous feedback from previous matches and suggesting date ideas.

This move positions Bumble alongside competitors like Tinder and Grindr, which are also incorporating AI features. Tinder uses AI to recommend profile pictures and offers a "Chemistry" feature that analyzes personal questions and camera roll photos for better matches. Meanwhile, Grindr's "Edge" subscription tier provides AI summaries of past chats and compatibility stats. While it's unclear whether AI will meaningfully improve the dating experience, these features could boost user engagement and subscription revenue for dating apps.
