Bose has announced a significant policy shift for its SoundTouch speaker line, opting to open source the software rather than completely bricking the devices when cloud support ends. Originally scheduled for February, the end-of-life (EoL) date has been extended to May 6 to accommodate this transition. By releasing API documentation to independent developers, Bose aims to allow the community to maintain functionality for these premium devices.

This move addresses widespread consumer backlash regarding the potential obsolescence of expensive hardware. While the official Bose app will enter a stripped-down mode, core features like AirPlay and Spotify Connect are confirmed to remain operational post-EoL. This decision highlights a growing industry trend of 'Right to Repair' and sustainable electronics, preventing functional speakers from becoming waste.
