Blood Dungeon: Messhof's Vampire Survivors Meets Spelunky Platformer

Messhof's Blood Dungeon combines auto-shooting mechanics with maze-like platforming in a distinctly retro package. The hand-animated 2D game features six arenas filled with traps, ladders, and chains as players dodge over 100 enemy types while wielding an arsenal of 100-plus weapons. Giant flying worms and other mythical creatures hunt you down through each stage.

Co-founder Mark Essen describes Blood Dungeon as Vampire Survivors blended with Spelunky, creating a unique routing challenge where enemies follow in mass while you navigate maze-like levels with gravity-based mechanics. Unlike Metroidvanias, there are no ability upgrades—progression comes through map completion and resource collection instead.

The game's absurd character roster includes Gun Man (a baby in a onesie), a hooded skeleton, and a naked buff dude, maintaining the studio's signature silly aesthetic. Messhof previously created indie classics Nidhogg and Nidhogg II, known for their elegant yet ridiculous blend of fencing and tug-of-war gameplay.

Blood Dungeon launches on PC and consoles in late summer 2026. The Venice, California-based studio's latest project embraces deliberately crude MS Paint-style visuals that complement its chaotic auto-shooter formula.
