Apple adds Color.io tech to boost Creator Studio

Apple confirmed it bought Patchflyer GmbH, the German studio behind the web‑based color grading platform Color.io. The EU acquisition filing shows the deal closed in January, and the move brings creator Jonathan Ochmann on board after he announced he would shutter the tool in 2025 to work at scale. Integrating Color.io’s workflow could deepen Creator Studio’s editing toolbox for users.

Creator Studio already leverages Final Cut Pro’s color grading features, but Patchflyer’s technology promises a more professional‑grade experience. Apple’s recent acquisition of MotionVFX, a provider of visual‑effects templates, signals a broader push to flesh out a native alternative to Adobe’s Creative Cloud. A tighter, subscription‑friendly suite could lure freelancers and small studios seeking cost‑effective production tools.

Apple’s services strategy, amplified under CEO Tim Cook and the incoming chief John Ternus, increasingly relies on bundling creative apps with hardware sales. By bolstering Creator Studio now, the company aims to offset slowing iPhone revenue and reduce dependence on App Store fees. The Color.io integration will likely arrive as an update rather than a standalone product, expanding Apple’s foothold in the creator market.
