Ansel Adams Trust Condemns Unauthorized AI Colorization Exhibition

The Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust publicly condemned an AI-generated color version of 'Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico' that appeared at AIPAD's The Photography Show without permission. The controversial piece, displayed by Danziger Gallery, allegedly exploited Adams' name and iconic image while failing to credit any human artist involved in the AI colorization process.

According to the Trust, they were never consulted before the work surfaced for sale. When alerted, the Trust contacted James Danziger immediately, requesting removal. However, correspondence shows Danziger continued leveraging Adams' name and 'Moonrise' while pursuing a broader commercial AI colorization venture with other artists' estates.

The Trust clarified that Adams himself was 'remarkably prescient about—and excited by—the potential of computers to transform photography.' Their objection centers on the unauthorized commercial exploitation rather than AI technology itself. The incident represents a significant ethical breach in art dealing circles.

This case highlights growing tensions around AI-generated art and intellectual property rights. As AI tools become more sophisticated, estates and galleries face new challenges protecting artists' legacies while navigating emerging technologies. The photography community now confronts questions about consent, attribution, and commercial use that existing frameworks never anticipated.
