Amazon Echo Show 16 Adds Nanomatte Display

Amazon has redesigned its Echo Show line, calling the new Echo Show 16 its "most advanced, versatile smart display" yet. The device features a 16-inch full high-definition screen, available with either a standard or a nanomatte finish. Amazon developed the nanomatte technology with Corning, using an anti-reflective etching that minimizes glare while preserving detail and color accuracy in a way conventional matte screens can't. Engadget found the technology effective when testing the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, where it reduced glare from strong light sources to nearly nothing.

Thanks to its bigger screen, the Echo Show 16 offers 10 percent more viewing area than the Echo Show 15. It also has a new anodized aluminum frame and is nearly 40 percent thinner than its predecessor. To support the slimmer design, Amazon redesigned its audio architecture with eight custom micro woofers and two tweeters. The display has 20 percent more computing power and a wide-angle 13-megapixel camera with the widest field of view Amazon has offered on an Echo Show. Its Visual ID facial recognition can now identify users up to 17 feet away, up from eight feet previously.

Like its predecessor, the Echo Show 16 includes built-in Fire TV for streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix, HBO Max and Disney+. Alexa+ now generates interactive content on the display, such as comparison charts for shopping and organized Cards for conversations like vacation planning. These features require a Prime membership or a standalone Alexa+ subscription.

The Echo Show 16 is available for pre-order and will start shipping later this year. The standard-display version costs $500 and the nanomatte version costs $570, with $100 off for pre-orders. Optional stands are available for $70 or $125 for a swivel-and-tilt model.
