The Alexa Home Map is a visual way to see and control your smart home

Amazon introduced the Alexa Home Map, an interactive 3D map that lets users see and control their smart home devices. Unlike traditional tile-based interfaces from Google and Apple, the Home Map displays a digital blueprint of your home with animated icons for lights, speakers, and security cameras. According to Amazon, the map updates dynamically in real time, showing the actual color and brightness of smart lights and animations of cars and people moving around your yard. A demo showed precipitation like snow and rain when reflective of local weather. To set up the Home Map, users enter their address and walk through their home with a compatible iPhone to scan the interior using LIDAR. Once built, users can zoom into individual rooms, switch between floors, and filter devices by type. The feature will start rolling out in preview later this year on the Alexa Home Map app on iOS, as well as on the Alexa and Ring apps, and larger Echo Show devices like the Echo Show 16. Amazon described the Home Map as making your smart home setup feel less like a diagram and more like a living picture of your home.

The interface uses visualization inspired by Tesla's Driving Visualization rather than photorealistic representations. Amazon noted that lights on the map will glow in the same color and brightness they're set to, so a blue-lit living room or dimmed bedroom appears accurately on screen. Speakers actively playing show music notes dancing around them. The company emphasized that these touches make the map feel less like a diagram and more like a living picture of your home, and it will continue to get even better over time.

Setup requires taking a compatible iPhone through your home to create a 3D scan using LIDAR technology. Amazon explained that once your map is built, you can move around it freely, zooming into individual rooms and switching between floors. Users can also filter devices by type to quickly view just lights or plugs in their home, and choose between light or dark mode depending on preferences.
