iPhone Duo Launch
The iPhone Duo arrives this Friday, and Apple has confirmed that walk-in availability will be extremely limited, with only a small allotment of stock in stores. Pre-order customers will receive the first shipments, and accessory makers are already rolling out cases and screen protectors ahead of the launch. Early reviews describe the device as mostly positive, though one mixed verdict calls it both fun and frustrating. Our own hands-on review argues the foldable form factor is the biggest change to the iPhone in nearly two decades. Apple has also said Reachability will come to the device later this year, while Apple Pencil support arrives with iOS 27.2 next week.
Software and Services
Google has brought Gemini into Google Maps on CarPlay, letting drivers ask questions mid-route. Apple Music, meanwhile, has unveiled a new design rebrand built around a logo made from sound, leaning heavily on Liquid Glass visuals. Bluesound has added native Apple Music support to its speakers. Apple Arcade is also expanding with sports game updates in November, and a Skyrim installer now lets owners run the game on Apple silicon Macs.
Security
Apple has blocked eight compromised web certificates on iOS and iPad OS that could be exploited by scammers, though a related Mac vulnerability remains open. Separately, a severe flaw in PHP is expected to cause disruption across the web in the coming days. Users are also being warned about Apple Cash scams, in which strangers send money and ask for it back.
Business and Regulation
Loop Capital has downgraded Apple from Buy to Hold, citing its iPhone sales outlook. Apple could also owe more than the $5.7 billion patent verdict against it, depending on further rulings. In the UK, the competition regulator has proposed changes that would make it easier for rivals to compete with Apple Pay. Apple's App Store chief has defended the push for premium games. In France, looters emptied an Apple store during protests, with stores in Bordeaux and Lille both hit.
Design and Hardware Roadmap
CEO John Ternus has said that whimsical design still matters at Apple, and that user experience guides product decisions. Apple's Designers of Tomorrow program is also highlighting emerging creative talent. Looking further ahead, Apple is hiring 6G modem engineers as it plans for post-5G iPhones, and an OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro is in development. An iPad mini 8 with an OLED display is also reportedly due next week.
Coming Up
The iPad mini 8 is expected next week, and iOS 27.2 with Apple Pencil support arrives next week. The iPhone Duo goes on sale Friday.
