The ZimaCube 2 is a six-bay NAS designed for tinkerers, offering no software lock-in at a competitive $799 price point. While its Thunderbolt claims fall short, the device runs standard x86 architecture, allowing users to install any compatible OS — a major advantage for enthusiasts. With an Intel Core i3-1215U, 8GB DDR5 RAM (expandable to 64GB), and 256GB NVMe storage, it handles multitasking well.
The gunmetal chassis features a magnetic faceplate, six SATA bays, four M.2 NVMe slots, and dual 2.5GbE ports. It’s built for desk use, not closet hiding, with front USB-A, USB-C, and audio jacks. Back ports include Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, DisplayPort, and additional USB.
Noise is rated at 30dB. Ideal for those who want flexibility over locked-down appliances.
