UK Government Demands Nudity Filters Apple Already Provides

Prime Minister Kier Starmer is pressuring tech firms to implement device controls that stop children from receiving sexually explicit images. This demand comes during London Tech Week, with the government threatening legislation and criminal liability for CEOs who refuse to comply. The UK wants Apple and Google to build or enable filters that block nude imagery for minors.

Ironically, the requested technology already exists within iOS 15.2 via a feature called Communication Safety. This tool uses on-device machine learning to blur nude photos and videos in Messages, FaceTime, and AirDrop. It is enabled by default for children and teenagers, effectively performing the exact task the government is now demanding.

Past attempts at age verification in the UK led to services like Imgur leaving the country and security issues with Discord. While this latest demand is more practical, it shows a gap in technical knowledge among lawmakers. The government is essentially threatening prison time for a feature that is already active on millions of devices.

Whether current filters satisfy lawmakers remains the main point of contention. Officials may push for these protections to expand across more apps. This friction highlights a recurring pattern of government overreach based on a lack of understanding of existing software capabilities.
