Never Refrigerate a Hot iPhone – Why It’s Dangerous

Social media often spreads dangerous advice, such as refrigerating an overheated iPhone. Doing so can cause more harm than the original heat. The cold environment forces ambient humidity to condense on the device’s internals, leading to moisture damage that may swell batteries or even cause an explosion. Repair shop owner Jamie Farnell from Wem, England reports a rise in heat‑related repairs, noting that the real culprit is not heat but condensation. Even though Apple markets the iPhone as water‑resistant, it is not bone dry, and the risk grows with age. Placing a hot phone in a fridge or freezer is like exposing a cold soda can to humid air—moisture precipitates and damages sensitive electronics.

Prevention is better than cure: never leave lithium‑ion devices in a car where 85 degrees outside can push interior temps above 115 degrees in minutes, and keep devices out of direct sunlight. If a temperature warning appears, move the phone to a cool, shaded spot, stop charging, and wait several hours. Monitor for glitches or repeated warnings; persistent issues may require an authorized service provider.

By avoiding the fridge and following proper cooling practices, you protect your device’s battery life and prevent costly repairs.
