MacPaw shutting down Setapp Mobile EU app store

MacPaw is shuttering its EU-only Setapp Mobile app store and CleanMyMac Business service, blaming Apple for the former's failure. The company launched Setapp Mobile in 2024 to capitalize on the EU's Digital Markets Act, which forced Apple to allow rival iOS storefronts. Now, MacPaw cites "still-evolving and complex business terms" as the reason for shutting it down on February 16, 2026.

Meanwhile, the CleanMyMac Business device management platform, launched just last year, will close on July 14, 2026. MacPaw stated it is shifting resources to areas offering "the greatest long-term value," though it hinted at developing a new business-focused tool. The core Setapp subscription for Mac apps and the standard CleanMyMac utility will continue operating unaffected.

This retreat highlights the immense difficulty third-party developers face when competing with Apple's integrated ecosystem, even under regulatory pressure. While the EU's DMA opened a door, complex terms and Apple's control over the platform ultimately made the venture unsustainable. MacPaw's pivot suggests a strategic refocus on its established Mac software strengths rather than the fraught mobile app distribution market.
