macOS 27 to Drop Intel Support and Rosetta 2 This Fall

Apple's upcoming macOS 27 marks the definitive end of Intel Mac compatibility, launching this fall without support for any Intel-based machines. The new operating system completely removes Rosetta 2, the translation layer that has allowed Intel apps to run on Apple Silicon Macs since the transition began in 2020.

This isn't just about hardware compatibility—macOS 27 will actively uninstall Rosetta 2 during the update process, preventing any Intel-designed applications from launching. Apple's timeline extends further: macOS 28 in fall 2027 will permanently disable Rosetta 2 for most apps, while security updates for Intel Macs themselves are expected to end around fall 2029.

The transition means users relying on Intel-only apps must seek Apple Silicon alternatives or third-party solutions like Crossover. While some older games will retain Rosetta 2 support through macOS 28, the message to developers and users is clear: Intel compatibility has an expiration date. Anyone still using Intel Macs in 2026 should plan their upgrade path now.
