MacBook Neo Wins Over Ex-Microsoft Exec: $599 ARM Laptop Impresses

Former Microsoft Windows chief Steven Sinofsky has become an unlikely champion of Apple's new $599 MacBook Neo, praising the ARM-based laptop as a superior replacement for his MacBook Air. Sinofsky, who led Microsoft's original ARM-powered Surface project, says the MacBook Neo delivers performance that makes its compromises "totally acceptable and go unnoticed."

Launched on March 11, 2026, the MacBook Neo uses Apple's A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro rather than an M-series processor, a decision that initially raised eyebrows. The 8GB unified memory configuration also sparked concerns about performance limitations. However, Sinofsky reports his 512GB model uses less than 7GB during normal use, dismissing worries about memory constraints.

Sinofsky's endorsement carries particular weight given his history with ARM computing at Microsoft. He acknowledges that Apple's approach to transitioning to ARM chips contrasts sharply with Microsoft's strategy, which kept x86 and ARM ecosystems separate. This division, he argues, created confusion and relegated ARM Windows devices to "second-class citizen" status. The MacBook Neo demonstrates how Apple's unified ARM strategy and Rosetta emulation layer have made the transition seamless for users.
