MacBook Neo Review: Apple's $700 Mac Delivers Premium Build

Apple's MacBook Neo represents a fascinating entry in the Mac lineup, combining iPhone-class performance with premium build quality at an unprecedented price point. The aluminum construction and solid feel immediately distinguish it from typical budget laptops, though the Apple logo lacks the usual shine and there's no display notch.

Performance comes from the A18 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro but with one fewer GPU core. In benchmarks, it outperforms base M1 MacBook Air by 47% in single-core tasks while falling significantly behind current M-series chips in multi-core performance. The 13-inch display offers 2408-by-1506 resolution at 219 pixels per inch, though it lacks P3 wide color support found on other current Macs.

At just 2.7 pounds with an 11.71-inch width, the MacBook Neo achieves the smallest footprint among Apple's laptops despite matching the MacBook Air's weight. The colorful options - silver, citrus, blush, and indigo - add personality, with color-matched keyboards on the colored models. However, the single 8GB RAM configuration and USB 2.0 port limitations reveal the engineering constraints of using iPhone silicon in a Mac.
