Mac Studio and Mini Stock Drops Hint at M5 Refresh

Inventory shortages are cropping up across specific configurations for the Mac mini and Mac Studio on Apple's online store in the United States. Customers trying to configure machines with higher-end specs, such as the M4 Pro chip paired with 64GB of memory on the mini, are seeing listings marked 'Currently Unavailable' or delayed by several weeks.

This sudden scarcity strongly suggests Apple is clearing channels ahead of an expected desktop refresh. While portable Macs have already received the M5 chip treatment, the Mac Studio and Mac mini remain on the older silicon. Industry observers believe these desktop updates will arrive soon, potentially featuring internal M5 upgrades while retaining the existing external designs.

Specific high-spec models are proving difficult to secure. For instance, certain Mac Studio builds featuring the M3 Ultra chip and 256GB memory are inaccessible, showing a 'Unavailable' status. Even slightly lower options, like 96GB memory, carry lead times stretching six to seven weeks, pointing toward cautious inventory management by Apple.

While these shortages could theoretically relate to broader supply chain issues, the pattern aligns perfectly with typical pre-launch behavior for Apple's professional desktop hardware. The desktop lineup is the final holdout for the M5 generation silicon.
