U.S. lawmakers have urged President Donald Trump to investigate the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which they describe as "anti-American." A letter signed by 25 Republicans, including seven members of the House of Representatives Trade Subcommittee, calls for trade investigations against the E.U., arguing the DMA unfairly targets U.S. Big Tech firms.

The letter accuses the E.U. of using the DMA for "economic extraction and regulatory coercion against American firms." It highlights concerns that companies like Amazon and Microsoft would face "unprecedented regulatory burdens" on their cloud units, while European and Chinese rivals would not. Apple's designation as a gatekeeper under the DMA is also mentioned.

Lawmakers suggest using Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose tariffs on perceived unfair trade practices. This echoes a warning Trump issued in September 2025 about retaliating against E.U. regulations. The E.U. maintains it has the sovereign right to regulate digital activities within its borders in a "fair and non-discriminatory manner."
