iPhone Duo Features Apple Didn't Announce

Now that the iPhone Duo is at least partially out in the wild, reviewers who have used the device are finding features that Apple did not announce. Apple officially entered the folding smartphone market with the iPhone Duo on September 9. Customers won't be able to buy one until October 23, but select reviewers have already shared their thoughts on Apple's first foldable.

Alongside the usual opinions, many early reviews detail obscure iPhone Duo features. Most notably, when unfolded, the iPhone Duo supports Edge Light. The outermost area of the internal display acts as a ring light during FaceTime video calls. This capability was previously exclusive to Macs with Apple Silicon chips, which gained Edge Light with macOS Tahoe 26.2. That makes the iPhone Duo the first iPhone with Edge Light support.

Apple has also customized Reachability for the device. Because the iPhone Duo is similar in size to the iPad mini when unfolded, Apple included a horizontal version of the feature, which was introduced in 2014 to make top-of-screen interface elements easier to reach. Swiping toward the edge of the screen may move half of the on-screen UI to the left or right. Wired reports that the iPhone Duo will get Reachability "later this year," per Apple.

Another new capability is Smart Take. Apple says the iPhone Duo "can detect when everyone is ready and takes the picture," removing the need for timers or button presses. The outer display can also serve as a live viewfinder when taking photos. Additionally, the device will gain Apple Pencil support with the upcoming iOS 27.2 update, which is already available in its release candidate build.
