iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture: incredible but fragile

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro introduces a variable aperture system, promising better photos than ever. The 48MP Fusion Main Camera features a variable aperture optimized for portrait capture at f/1.8, with options from f/1.48 to f/4.0. The system uses six laser-cut blades thinner than a human hair, moved by a rotor mechanism, and a custom lens.

However, this innovative design appears delicate, raising concerns about durability—shocks from drops could knock components loose or jam the rotor. While the camera offers enhanced control over depth of field and light, especially in low-light or group shots, its long-term reliability remains untested. The updated Camera app also provides direct aperture and shutter speed controls, with third-party app support.

Despite the fragility concerns, the feature is a significant step forward for mobile photography, though only time will tell how it holds up in real-world use.
