iPhone 18 Pro Storage Rumors Point to Slower SSDs

A new rumor suggests Apple may equip higher-capacity iPhone 18 Pro models with slower QLC NAND storage, a claim previously circulated for the iPhone 16 Pro. This potential shift would see 1TB and 2TB models utilize QLC NAND from SK Hynix, while lower-capacity 256GB and 512GB versions would retain faster TLC NAND. This strategy could help Apple manage component sourcing challenges.

QLC NAND allows for more data per cell but is generally less reliable and slower than TLC NAND, especially for random data reads. However, the practical impact on typical iPhone usage, characterized by bursty data transfers rather than sustained loads, is debated. Previous rumors of QLC storage in iPhone 16 Pro models did not materialize as widely reported.

Apple reportedly aims to use faster TLC NAND from manufacturers like SK Hynix, Kioxia, and SanDisk for the more common 256GB and 512GB configurations. The 1TB model might feature a mix, while the 2TB version is slated for exclusively QLC storage, according to the leak. This approach might stem from difficulties in sourcing sufficient 1TB and 2TB TLC components affordably.

While this rumor echoes past speculation, its accuracy remains uncertain. If implemented, the performance difference between QLC and TLC storage is unlikely to be noticeable for most users, potentially making this a cost-saving measure for Apple without significant user-facing drawbacks.
