iPhone 18 Pro Front Camera May Jump to 24MP

Rumors suggest Apple's iPhone 18 Pro could feature a 24MP front-facing camera, representing a significant upgrade from the current 12MP sensor. The speculation comes from leaker WhyLab on Weibo, who claims the new model will offer sharper selfies and improved low-light performance compared to the iPhone 17 Pro's 18MP front camera.

This isn't the first time we've heard about a potential front camera upgrade. The rumor actually originated from ApplesClubs four days earlier, showing an evolutionary pattern from iPhone 16 Pro's 12MP to iPhone 17 Pro's 18MP, and now potentially iPhone 18 Pro's 24MP. However, it's worth noting that Apple already uses a 24MP sensor in the iPhone 17, but employs pixel binning to output 18MP images.

Pixel binning combines multiple pixels into "superpixels" to improve low-light performance, which explains why Apple advertises an 18MP camera despite having a higher-resolution sensor. If Apple were to eliminate pixel binning for the iPhone 18 Pro's front camera, users might see noticeably darker selfies in challenging lighting conditions, though the theoretical 24MP output could deliver more detailed images in ideal conditions.
