India iPhone parts plant cleared after pollution probe

Apple’s push to shift iPhone production out of China has left Tata Electronics as a key back‑plate supplier in India. The Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu faced farmer complaints in late 2025 over alleged wastewater seepage, prompting the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to launch five inspections and threaten closure. Regulators now say the threat is lifted and keeps the line on track for 2026 output.

Tata argued it remedied the issue, submitting independent water‑sample analysis that showed all parameters within legal limits. The board’s own recent tests reportedly matched those results, leading it to drop any further action. Neither Apple nor the board commented publicly, leaving some doubt about the earlier contamination findings but clearing the path for continued output. The findings also ease investor concerns about supply‑chain stability.

With the all‑clear, Tata can keep feeding Apple’s expanding Indian supply chain, which now accounts for roughly a quarter of global iPhone volume. The company recently sealed a $1 billion partnership with Pegatron to boost manufacturing capacity in Tamil Nadu, and it previously acquired Wistron’s Karnataka facility. Analysts see proof India can sustain larger output, removing a potential bottleneck as Apple deepens its non‑China footprint.
