While consumers can continue using robot vacuums they already own, the order creates a new hurdle for manufacturers seeking to introduce qualifying new models in the United States. These devices will require a Conditional Approval from the Department of Defense, a process with unclear timelines.

The FCC's definition of advanced robotic devices is broad, encompassing mobile machines over 4.4 pounds with environmental sensors and network connectivity. While this won't immediately affect Apple Home users' ability to control existing vacuums, it could limit future choices. The restriction is based on manufacturing origin rather than a universal cybersecurity standard.
