Apple Updates Final Cut Camera with Direct Mac Transfer and ProRes Support

Apple released an updated version of its free Final Cut Camera app alongside new Final Cut Pro updates for Mac and iPad. The iPhone app enables multi-camera filming with live monitoring on iPad, targeting filmmakers who use Apple's professional video suite. While the core functionality remains unchanged, Apple streamlined how footage moves between devices.

Users can now connect an iPhone directly to a Mac via USB and import clips through Finder without first assembling a project on iPad. Previously, filmmakers had to export entire projects from iPad before transferring files, often requiring external drives for large video files. This direct transfer method treats the iPhone essentially as an external drive, cutting down workflow steps for editors.

New features include Clean HDMI Out for external monitors, which displays footage without on-screen controls—ideal for director review on set. The app also adds ProRes 422 format options including LT and HQ variants, though these require iPhone 13 Pro or newer. Users can finally disable digital zoom entirely to prevent accidental quality loss during remote shooting.

The update addresses a long-standing friction point for Final Cut Pro users who shoot on iPhone but edit on Mac. While direct Mac monitoring still isn't supported, the simplified transfer process and professional codec support make the workflow significantly more practical for mobile filmmaking.
