Apple Trademark Dispute With Apple Cinemas Heads Toward Settlement

Apple appears to be seeking an out-of-court resolution with Apple Cinemas after the movie theater chain faced a trademark infringement lawsuit. A court hearing set for May 26, 2026 was postponed when both companies filed motions to continue the case, signaling potential settlement negotiations.

The dispute stems from Apple Cinemas' expansion plans, which the technology giant argues place theaters too close to Apple Park and retail locations. Founded in 2010 with its first Massachusetts theater opening in 2013, the chain expanded to San Francisco in 2025 and announced plans for 100+ locations nationwide. Apple contends this geographic overlap creates consumer confusion.

Apple Cinemas maintains its name reflects New England geographic roots, not any connection to the tech company. However, a 2024 trademark application was rejected by the USPTO specifically due to potential confusion with Apple Inc. The theater chain previously ignored cease-and-desist letters before Apple filed suit.

This echoes Apple's earlier trademark battle with The Beatles' Apple Corps, though that case involved music industry agreements rather than geographic expansion. The outcome will likely force Apple Cinemas to rebrand, given Apple's history of aggressively protecting its trademarks across all business sectors.
